BMW X3 — the third generation of the crossover presented in June 2017. The new car received the index G01.
The design of the third iteration of the BMW X3 has much in common with the “appearance” previous models, but thanks to shortened overhangs, "volumetric" radiator grilles and new lighting equipment, the off-road vehicle is now perceived as more dynamic and sporty. With virtually unchanged dimensions compared to the previous model, the new BMW X3 features a five-centimeter longer wheelbase. Base wheels are now 18-inch (previously 17-inch) and there are even 21-inch options on the options list. Also available for a surcharge are fully LED taillights with a “three-dimensional” design, a spoiler on the trunk lid and exhaust pipes spaced apart on the sides.
The new generation model is available in three versions: xLine, Luxury Line and M Sport, with the last two presented for the first time. The Luxury Line is distinguished by additional chrome elements, underbody protection in two-tone design and classic-style light alloy wheels. While the hallmarks of the M Sport line are sports brakes with blue painted calipers, eye-catching rims and M aerodynamic components.
The third generation of the BMW X3 is equipped with a chassis with a double-articulated front suspension with anti-roll bars and a five-link rear suspension. The use of aluminum steering knuckles and lightweight tubular stabilizers, as well as the optimization of the front wheel guiding system, have reduced unsprung weights. In addition, the kinematics of the suspension and the settings of the electromechanical power steering with Servotronic function have been changed. The M Sport suspension or Dynamic Damper Control can be ordered separately. Sports brakes and adaptive steering with sporty settings are also available.
The xDrive20d four-cylinder and xDrive30d inline six-cylinder diesel versions, as well as the petrol model BMW X3 M40i, are prepared for the start of sales of the BMW X3. Also planned is the release of the BMW X3 xDrive30i and 20i with rear (sDrive) or all-wheel drive (xDrive). The turbo engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The roll moment distribution has been shifted rearward in the new X3 to optimize driving dynamics, and in the typical BMW xDrive all-wheel drive setup with a focus on rear-wheel drive, an even greater proportion of torque is now directed to the rear wheels.
Modifications of the BMW X3 (G01):
The new BMW X3 M40i is the first M Performance model in the BMW X3 range. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine develops up to 360 hp. power and 500 Nm of torque (at 1520-4800 rpm). Average fuel consumption is claimed at 8.4 l/100 km, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 4.8 seconds. The turbo engine is mated to an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission with Launch Control. The new X3 version also comes as standard with an M sports exhaust system with shift flaps and tailpipes in black chrome, M sports brakes, an M sports suspension with specific M Performance settings, adaptive sports steering and 20-inch light-alloy wheels. As an option, the X3 M40i can be equipped with the Adaptive M Sports Suspension, which offers an even wider range of settings between sportiness and comfort.
In addition to the iDrive controller in conjunction with the Professional navigation system, the on-board electronics of the BMW X3 can now also be controlled using the touch screen or gestures (previously only available on the flagship BMW 7 Series and new BMW 5 series ). The set of driver assistance systems includes such "assistants" as active cruise control, which is capable of slowing down the car to a complete stop in the event of a slowdown in the traffic flow and then also automatically set it in motion. As part of the optional Driving Assistant Plus safety package, which can actively intervene in driving, the Steering and Lane Guidance Assistant, Lane Change Assist and Lane Keeping Assist with Side Collision Protection, as well as the Preferential Warning System, the reverse traffic warnings and cross traffic warning system.
Compared to the previous model, the new BMW X3 offers more additional options. Among them, 3-zone climate control, as well as ventilated seats for the driver and front passenger made of perforated leather with a heating function. For the convenience of transporting large loads, the rear seat backrest is divided in the basic configuration in a ratio of 40:20:40 and is optionally equipped with a load position function with multi-stage adjustment of the angle of inclination for each individual section. In addition, this option includes remote unlocking of the backrest from the trunk. Thus, the volume of the luggage compartment can be increased from 550 liters to 1600 liters. In addition, the crossover can be equipped with a panoramic roof and acoustic side windows (an acoustic windshield is included in the basic package).
An interactive BMW Display Key is also available for the new BMW X3. They can not only remotely open or close the car door, but also get information about the fuel level in the tank, the need for maintenance, or whether the windows and sunroof are closed. In addition, an independent heating system can be controlled using the BMW Display Key (available as an option). In addition, the list of new features includes optional interior contour lighting and the Ambient Air air freshening system. The driver has six backlight colors available: orange, lilac, mint, bronze, blue and white. Thanks to the special nature of the lighting at night, it seems that the central display is floating above the front panel. As for the fragrance, it not only creates a pleasant aroma in the cabin (you can choose from eight smells and adjust the intensity of aromatization), but is also equipped with an air ionization function.
The BMW X3 is produced at the BMW Group plant in Spartanburg (USA).
