bmw i8 - a serial sample of the model (factory index I12) was presented in Frankfurt in autumn 2013. The sports coupe became the second (after bmw i3 ) the car of the new brand of the Bavarians, which was named bmw i. Under it, the Germans intend to release a whole range of nature-loving and outstanding cars.
The company dubbed the BMW i8 "the sports car of the future." Such words four-seater (boarding formula 2 + 2) coupe deserved by no means by chance. Despite the fact that the car is a hybrid, its dynamic performance deserves respect. Sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour coupe overcomes in just 4.4 seconds. "Maximum speed" is electronically limited to 250 km / h.
The power plant of the BMW i8 consists of an electric motor (131 hp, 250 Nm on the pre-styling version and 143 hp, 250 Nm on the updated one) and a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (231 hp and 320 Nm). Interestingly, the electric motor transmits torque to the front wheels through a 2-speed "automatic", and the rear wheels receive traction through a six-speed automatic transmission from an internal combustion engine. The standard fuel tank holds 30 liters of gasoline, but a 42-liter can be ordered for an extra charge.
The declared range of the BMW i8 in the combined cycle for hybrid vehicles is 440 km or 600 km (with extended fuel tank). If you move exclusively on electric traction, then the coupe will be able to drive up to 35 kilometers (updated in 2017 model - up to 55 km). The battery of the electric motor, which is guaranteed for 8 years or 100,000 km, can be charged using both regenerative braking and the mains. The recovery time in the latter case depends on the characteristics of the source: up to 3 hours from a 3.6 kW (230 V / 16 A) and about 4.5 hours from a “socket” (230 V / 10 A).
No matter how paradoxical it may sound, it was the “hybridity” that endowed the coupe with sporting attributes. The lithium-ion battery located at the bottom provided an almost perfect weight distribution between the axles of 49 to 51. In addition, thanks to this solution, the center of gravity of the car is also very low - 460 mm from the ground. Of course, aerodynamics (drag coefficient is 0.26) and the use of ultralight materials also played a significant role.
In Europe, sales of the "environmentally correct" sports car started in 2014. The coupe is equipped by default with a mechatronic electronically controlled chassis, has original “wing doors”, and for an extra charge it even offers smart laser headlights, which, according to the developers, are 70% more efficient than “ordinary” LED ones.
