If BMW i8 Coupe - a two-door car with a 2 + 2 seating formula, then its fellow BMW i8 Roadster is designed for only two. The convertible roof retracts completely into a compartment at the rear of the vehicle. The servo system folds the soft top compactly into a perpendicular position, creating an additional 100 liters of luggage space behind the seats. Folding and unfolding takes 15 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. When the roof is folded down, the rear window is raised by about 30 millimeters to protect the driver and passenger from the wind.
The BMW Roadster gets new carbon fiber gullwing doors with an aluminum outer frame and no bezels for the side windows. At the same time, the windshield frame is completely made of carbon fiber. This high-strength material increases structural rigidity and provides occupant protection in the event of a vehicle rollover. Carbon is also used in the manufacture of thresholds with transverse reinforcements of increased strength. Additional power elements on the front and rear axles help to increase body rigidity. The weight of the new BMW i8 Roadster without passengers and cargo is 1,595 kilograms, which is only 60 kilograms more than that of the BMW i8 Coupé.
The BMW i8 Roadster and updated BMW i8 Coupe received a new lithium-ion battery. The high-voltage unit is located in the center of the vehicles at the base of the body. The cell capacity has been increased from 20 to 34 Ah, and the total energy storage has increased from 7.1 to 11.6 kWh. The cell configuration allows for an increase in output by 12 hp, which in peak conditions is 143 hp. Thus, the hybrid sports car can perform even more dynamic sprints solely on electricity, accelerating without connecting the combustion engine to 105 km/h instead of the previous 70 km/h. The internal combustion engine is only activated at speeds above this or when the driver presses the accelerator pedal hard.
The internal combustion engine of the BMW i8 Roadster has also been optimized compared to the engine of the pre-reform i8 Coupe, although its output characteristics have been preserved - the power of the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine reaches 231 hp, and the maximum torque is 320 Nm. The petrol unit is accompanied by a diesel particulate filter, which traps particulate matter contained in the exhaust gases and thereby reduces harmful emissions. The total output of the system, consisting of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, reaches 374 hp. According to the “passport”, the BMW i8 Roadster consumes 2.1 l / 100 km in a combined cycle, and acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 4.6 seconds.
All-wheel drive on the BMW i8 family is implemented according to a hybrid scheme. The electric motor "works" on the front wheels, and the gasoline rotates the rear. In hybrid mode, the electric motor assists the main engine when the vehicle accelerates particularly hard. It is also capable of recovering energy and redirecting it to a high-voltage battery during coasting and braking. In addition, the high-voltage starter-generator of the internal combustion engine can additionally store electricity.
With the Mode 2 charging cable, the i8 Traction Battery can be charged from a conventional outlet in four and a half hours. Charging the car with the BMW i Wallbox with up to 3.6 kW allows you to fully recharge in three hours.
The basic equipment of the BMW i8 Roadster includes Dynamic Damper Control. The standard 20-inch alloy wheels feature a lightweight design. Each one weighs one kilogram less than the lightest wheels previously offered for the BMW i8 Coupé. In addition, already in the “base” the roadster is equipped with a leather sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, leather seats with electric adjustment and heating, and also has a multifunction display, a driving assistant and a Professional navigation system. The main menu is presented in the form of horizontally arranged interactive icons, and control can be carried out using the touch display.
