BMW M5 - a new generation of "emka" with the F90 index was presented in August 2017, after which, in September of the same year, the car made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The main innovation for the model was the abandonment of rear-wheel drive in favor of the all-wheel drive transmission M xDrive. Its settings are selected in such a way that, if desired, it will not be difficult even for a beginner to enter a controlled skid. January 2018 BMW M5 installed two world records - for the longest synchronized two-car drift and the longest solo drift. For eight hours of continuous skidding, the sedan covered 374.17 km, improving the result of the previous record holder by 209.5 km.

"Emka" is different from the standard 5 series (G30) a more embossed aluminum hood, an “extremely light” (BMW wording) carbon fiber roof and a wider track. In addition, the novelty got extended sidewalls, large air intakes, “aggressive” M-bumpers and a quartet of branch pipes of a sports exhaust system separated by a diffuser. Thanks to the damper system, the exhaust sound can be adjusted.

Under the hood and carbon fiber protective cover is an upgraded S63B44T4 biturbo engine (4.4 l V8) with new turbochargers, increased boost pressure, more efficient injection, cooling and lubrication systems. Power - 600 hp at 5600-5700 rpm, and the maximum torque is 750 Nm in the range of 1800-5600 rpm. The motor is combined exclusively with the 8-speed "automatic" M Steptronic with the function of manual gear shifting, which replaced the preselective transmission.

The BMW M5 is equipped as standard with M compound brakes with blue calipers. Six-piston calipers with a fixed caliper are installed at the front, single-piston calipers with a floating caliper are installed at the rear. The optional M carbon-ceramic brakes, recognizable by their gold-coloured calipers, save the car an additional 23 kilograms of weight and withstand even higher loads.

The dynamics of the new M5 sedan will not leave anyone indifferent: acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but with the optional M Driver's Package the speedometer can go up to 305 km/h. Interestingly, a direct competitor Mercedes-AMG E63 accelerates from standstill to the first “hundred” in 3.5 seconds in the basic version and 3.4 seconds in the S-modification, and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h and shifts to 300 km/h for a surcharge.

The new M xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system works in tandem with a multi-plate central clutch located in the body between the axles of the car, and distributes torque between the front and rear wheels in the ratio required by the driver. The behavior of the system can also be customized according to the driver's wishes. The manufacturer offered 5 modes based on the joint work of the DSC dynamic stabilization system in three ranges (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and the M xDrive system itself (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). 

In the basic setting with active DSC and all-wheel drive, the electronics provide a slight amount of rear wheel slip when accelerating into corners, giving the BMW M5 increased agility. In dynamic M mode (MDM, 4WD Sport), the M xDrive system allows controlled skidding. The remaining three modes of operation with DSC off have been optimized for track driving. The driver has a choice of three options, including a fully rear-wheel drive mode that allows you to control the angle of the skid, which will be appreciated by lovers of fast and dynamic movement.

An important element that allows the BMW M5 to demonstrate a high level of grip with the road surface is the active M-differential on the rear axle, which can be independently adjusted. Additionally, you can adjust the degree of differential lock from 0 to 100%.

The BMW M5 is fitted with adaptive dampers. The driver can choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes, which also affect the sharpness of the M Servotronic steering. At the same time, separate presets Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus are provided for the engine. The M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel can be used to activate custom combinations of engine, transmission, suspension, M xDrive, DSC and windshield gauges. The driver will be able to transfer the car to the mode that suits him with a single click.

The standard equipment of the BMW M5 (F90) includes adaptive LED headlights, LED taillights, sports brakes with a drying function, 2-zone climate control, M leather steering wheel, heated sports seats with power adjustment and memory settings for the driver's seat, head-up display, a multimedia system with gesture control, a rear M spoiler, polished 19-inch alloy wheels with mixed tires front and rear (275/40 R19 and 285/40 R19) and other equipment. Options include M bucket seats with improved lateral support, night vision with pedestrian detection, park assist, active cruise control with Stop & Go, 4-zone climate control, Bower & Wilkins audio system, power tailgate, keyless access and door closers.

Serial production of the BMW M5 (F90) started in December 2017 at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing, Germany.
