In the new iteration, the exterior design of BMW's iconic 'Troika' is characterized by clear lines and embossed surfaces. The main proportions and profile of the car have not changed much, but it has grown in all dimensions. So, the BMW in the back of the G20 has become 85 mm longer (now 4,709 mm) of its predecessor, the BMW 3 Series F30. In addition, the novelty is 16 mm wider (1,827 mm) and 1 mm higher (1,442 mm) than the previous generation car. The wheelbase has grown by 41 mm (to 2,851 mm, which is 21 mm more than the “base” of the BMW 5 Series E39), and the track has been widened by 43 mm at the front and 21 mm at the rear.
The standard equipment of the sedan includes full LED headlights, and the list of additional options includes adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight high beam control. Pictured is a BMW 3 Series by Luxury Line.
The front panel of the BMW 3 Series G20 is slightly turned towards the driver, in front of whom is the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional, familiar from the new BMW X5, without physical indicators. Various vehicle functions are controlled using the touchscreen display in the center console, steering wheel buttons, iDrive controller or voice control.
On the central panel there is a block with displays, buttons for adjusting the air conditioning system and air vents. The engine on/off button is now located on the center console, which also houses the shift lever or the new selector lever, iDrive controller, Driving Experience Control and the electromechanical parking brake button.
The new BMW 3 Series is lighter than its predecessor – up to 55 kg difference, depending on equipment. At the same time, the four-door has a lower center of gravity and a 50:50 axle load distribution. Both the standard suspension and the optional M-sport suspension include progressive dampers. Their stiffness constantly adjusts to the spring travel to smooth out the bounce caused by bumps in the road or inertia in tight corners.
In addition to the sporty M-suspension (which has been reduced by 10 mm), an adaptive M-suspension with electronically controlled dampers is available as an option. Also available as an option is an M Sport braking system with four-piston fixed calipers up front. The M Sport differential is available for the BMW 330i and BMW 330d in combination with the M Sports Suspension or the Adaptive M Suspension. The electronically adjustable rear axle lock improves traction, agility, directional stability and cornering dynamics.
At launch, the new BMW 3 Series will be offered with two inline four-cylinder turbo engine options: a 190 hp diesel engine. (320d) and 258 hp petrol. (330i). There will also be a version of the BMW 320d xDrive with all-wheel drive. All vehicles are equipped as standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission, dynamic cruise control, Start/Stop function, drive mode selector and parking distance warning (front and rear).
Options on the BMW 3 Series include Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Driving Assistant with Lane Change Warning and Rear Collision Warning, a new head-up display, and Reversing Parking Assist. For a surcharge, the Professional driving assistant is also available, which includes features that increase comfort and safety. Among them is the steering and lane keeping assistant with active side impact protection.
In addition, the new BMW 3 Series has a parking assistant that controls the driving, acceleration, braking and selection of the correct transmission gear. The list of functions of the parking assistant includes a reversing assistant, which allows the car to automatically move back along a previously traveled path for a distance of up to 50 meters.
The BMW 3 Series (G20) is produced in Germany, Mexico and China.
